Combined Visual Fault Locator & Fibre Length Meter

Functions as a visual fault locator up to 5 Kilometers and length tests multimode or singlemode fibre up to 1.5 Kilometers !

Most quality VFL's will go this distance. However at extreme distances like this the "fault finding" capability is reduced to fibre identification only. At shorter "LAN" distances high energy red laser light can be used to see breaks in fibre behind patch panels (hence the name visual fault finder). But be assured VOLT holds its own against any other brand name VFL!

fibre installations are increasingly required to have fibre length measurements to comply with bid requirements. Rather than purchase expensive certification test sets, the VOLT can be added to an installer’s existing fibre test kit for a fraction of the cost.

Optical length testers save time by eliminating the need to measure fibre by the cable jacket. fibre links may also go through multiple cross-connects or have splices in the middle, thereby making jacket markings invalid. Optical measurement of fibre produces accurate results without the need for jacket markings.

Optical measurement also saves time by eliminating the need to estimate the length of the fibre run with a measuring wheel. This method is especially troublesome and inaccurate in networks that traverse walls, are in a star topology, or contain riser cables.

The VOLT uses a "round-robin" method of measuring fibre length. This is accomplished by looping back two fibres at one end of the fibre run. The round trip time that the light takes to travel through the fibres is converted to length in kilometers, then divided by two to show the length of the fibre cable. There is no need to measure the length of all the fibres; the length measurement can be applied to all fibres in the cable.

Key Benefits
  • Measures the length of both single-mode and multimode fibre with accuracy of ± 2.5 meters
  • High-intensity visible red laser allows for visible fault location of breaks and micro bends
  • Pulsed mode provides easy fibre identification
  • Easy-to-read bright red 7-segment LED display
  • 15 hours continuous use on one 9v battery
  • Low battery indicator
  • Handheld
  • Lightweight

NOTE: The VOLT is not designed to measure distance to a fault like an OTDR.

The VOLT is designed to measure the end-to-end length of a fibre cable.  A pair of terminated fibres, looped back at the far end of the cable, are required for end-to-end fibre cable length measurement.
